Suggestions? Advice?

I got an email from my Aunt today telling us (the fam) that my G'pa is in the hospital right now due to pneumonia, and his oncologist who is treating him for lung cancer feels that G'pa has 3-6 months to live. Next week he moves back to the convalesent home and they'll do another round of chemo. I talked to G'pa tonight, and he isn't thrilled about the home or the chemo, but he's going to do it.

I need advice and suggestions for projects, like afghans, that will knit up quickly and aren't terribly complicated. I've asked the lovely people over at the KR Forums for some help, and I'm asking anyone who might stop by here for some advice or suggestions, too...If there's a pattern you love, that knits up quickly, I'd really like to hear about it.

Thanks in advance.

Many prayers. When I go home tonight, I'll check my book of quick knit afghans to see if I find something that might work. Remember you can pick something relatively small and do it in bulky - polar weight and it'll get done pretty quickly. I'll get back to you, until then, you and your grandfather are in my prayers and thoughts...

    Love, Amie

I don't know whether you have Issues with particular yarns or not, but Lion Brand Homespun works up into a quick and sturdy and soft afghan, and it survives machine washing and drying well - important if he's in a convalescent home. The LB site has free quick patterns for Homespun and other things that might work. I don't know if he's on his feet or not but a soft pair of slipper socks would probably be welcome too and even faster than an afghan.

This is exciting, I'm actually using my knitting journal as a reference for a past project I did. i'm so glad i'm actually getting use out of it.

When my grams was moved into a home, I thought about making her a lap blanket, but instead I made her a long rectangular shawl that she could drap over he shoulders. She LOVES it. She wraps it around her shoulders, uses it in her lap, and it is just the right softness for her. I used Alpaca Boucle by Plymouth Yarn. I used color 12 and 2 and made thick stripes, it was $5.00 a skein, I used 6 all together, but very easy to just buy more if you want to make a bigger piece.

Knitting in garter stitch (adds some stretch to the piece) i cast on 44 stitches on US13 needles and knit til it was about 5 feet long. Unfortuantetly I'm not sure about the washing instructions, but it is a VERY fast knit, very forgiving yarn and very soft and easy.

Good luck, and I'm sorry to hear about your g'pa. The best thing is something handknit with love.

    Hi Ladies -

I'm so grateful for your thoughtful suggestions.

Amie, I look forward to hearing your suggestions for quick-knit afghans.

Catherine, I've had some bad luck with LB Homespun, but I agree that it is soft and comes in lots of lovely colors.

Knittens, it's always nice to hear from you, and I think that doing something not too wide but long is a really good idea.

I'm thinking I could use some LB Homespun and follow Knittens guidelines.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment, and for your great suggestions.
